Make your EC2 boot time faster for your Windows Server AMI

blog image

Every Amazon EC2 Windows instance follows the standard Windows operating system (OS) launch procedures, which involve multiple reboots and typically take 15 minutes or more to complete. However, Amazon EC2 Windows Server AMIs with the EC2 Fast Launch feature enabled perform some of these steps and reboots beforehand, significantly reducing the time needed to launch an instance.

Any account with access to an AMI that has EC2 Fast Launch enabled can have reduced launch times. When the AMI owner grants you permission to launch instances, the pre-provisioned snapshots originate from the AMI owner’s account.

If you have access to an AMI that supports EC2 Fast Launch, you can enable or disable faster launching for the shared AMI. When you enable EC2 Fast Launch on a shared AMI, Amazon EC2 creates the pre-provisioned snapshots directly in your account. If you run out of snapshots in your account, you can still use the snapshots from the AMI owner’s account.
